I got kicked out of the Ship of Fools forum today* Ship of Fools *. Apparently, being a Christian forum, they couldn't stomach the teaching of the Bible! To get an idea of the how important the subject of hell is to ministers in the UK, there was a minister on the forum who mentioned that out of 1500 sermons preached, he has never even mentioned it! According to him, hell is "insignificant". Is he reading his Bible? There are two things in the Bible that,if you subscribe to the Christian scheme, are non-negotiable - (1) a fiery hell, and (2) predestination. In my view, there's nothing remotely consistent about a liberal "Christian". Anyone else got kicked out of a "Christian" forum?! Jon.

But what did you actually get expelled for? Were you trying to teach the Bible on the forum?

I've never been kicked out of a forum, but I have eaten After Eights at 7 o'clock in the evening before. I know that that's sailing pretty close to the wind, isn't it?

Just followed your link fnh. At first I thought it was actually anti-church. I have resigned from some forums, but thrown out, no.

You now have 'some form' huh?

Actually, you can find Christian groups that deny one (or maybe both?) of the above, and they still wouldn't be considered liberal.  Do the Seventh-Day Adventists believe in hell?  I think they believe sinners will be destroyed, and not spend eternity burning with the devil.  And there are many chuches that do not follow predestination (if you mean in the hyper-Calvinist sense of being born blessed to believe or doomed to doubt); the evangelical church I used to attend taught that everyone had free will and were responsible for their choice to choose salvation or punishment.

It would be interesting to examine church history for when the concepts of a eternally punishing hell and predestination became popular.  I doubt that the early church claimed unity of teaching on these subjects; that had to wait until a church hierarchy had gained control and had the power to declare what was "truth".

Of course, if it were simply a choice between salvation and punishment, I'd choose salvation any day. Who wouldn't?

But the choice is much more complex than that - including among many other things the vast array of religious options you have before you, each of which officially leads to salvation. Add to that the fact that to gain salvation you have to live your life in fashions dictated and frequently contradicted by Earthly churches, and you begin to get a picture of the puzzling nature of the way to salvation. No one church can claim to have the exclusively correct way of ensuring salvation, so why should any one church be preferred by God to any other? Or indeed, no church at all?

Rationality has never been the strongpoint of religious teaching.

Many congratulations - I managed to get thrown out of that haven of self-satisfied, self-important wankers some years ago.

What was so amusing is that i strung them along for months, pressding all the right buttons to annoy them.

And they didn't realise - pathetic cretins

They are under the impression that their message board is some sort of genuine 'community' - they went so far as to have a quite maacabre story of someone who was supposedly dying and then held memorial days for her where people who had never met this 'person' wrote saccharine nonsense about her. I doubt she ever existed. Bizarre. The people who run it get quite hysterical and are clearly psychologically dependent upon it.

Still, given that traditional christians believe something which is clearly nonsense - that a man is the son of 'God', and his death and coming alive again means we can be 'saved' from 'hell' - hardly credible history, now , is it?
